Jupiter, the king of the gods, is in love with Alcmene, a mere mortal. To seduce her, he "transforms" himself into Amphitryon, the beautiful woman's husband, while Mercury, for his part, takes on the appearance of Sosia, the valet. From this ancient fable, Molière created a spectacular comedy where the gods, descended from heaven, amuse themselves by sowing discord among humans, while the spectators themselves are led astray by the striking resemblance of the "sosies" (look-alikes). At the same time, Molière illustrates the gallant atmosphere that reigned at court in 1668, as Jupiter borrows as much from Louis XIV as from the Greek hero.
