They describe the dangers, the violence, the impossibility of living in their country of origin that drove them to flee, away from a country that has become a lawless state, delivered to mafia powers even more violent than the feudal systems that preceded them: racketeering, kidnappings, organ or human trafficking are their daily lot.

But they also describe, regarding the "host" country, everything that transforms their stay into a true obstacle course, a new ordeal. This journey is not only bristling with physical barbed wire, but also with symbolic obstacles, erected by absurd, iniquitous legal texts, constantly changing, impossible to understand and master.

A book to hear refugees who reflect on their political future This book in no way aims to subject refugees to the victimizing representation of which they are too often the object, or to the humanitarian treatment to which the demands of law are too often reduced. Nor does it want to reduce their words to those of raw "testimony" intended to become material for reflection for others. The people interviewed, whatever their background, are first and foremost subjects who think about their own history, reflect on it, and through it reflect on a history that is beyond their own, and in which they are fully aware of participating: that of law, that of a political future.

A book to articulate philosophy and photography The three moments of the text (past, present, future) are echoed by three photographic moments: that of the rooms where families are gathered, each reserving that minimum of intimacy expressed, in the precariousness of the places, by a decorative choice, a color arrangement; that of the common rooms, where intimacy is preserved only by the verticality of stretched blankets; and finally, that of the detention centers, a totally standardized universe of carceral geometry.

The radical aesthetic of documentary photography thus punctuates the dynamic of the text in counterpoint. Those who are given a voice in the text never appear in the images, which only present the locations. And where the text moves from the past to the future, the images, in resonance, descend from still relatively free spaces to those of incarceration.

But the text and the images are animated by an identical force, communicated to the photographer as well as to the philosopher by those they met, and from whom they drew inspiration to develop this common work: the documentary demand, like the philosophical demand, in their will to speak and to show, affirm, as far from the lies of a supposed "neutrality" as from the naivety of emotional pity, the invigorating power of anger.
